The Simón Bolívar University, created in 1967, is a Venezuelan public university specializing in scientific and technological research, and one of the country’s most important and prestigious. It comprises two campuses: one in Caracas and one in Vargas. It is the former campus, located in Baruta, inside the Metropolitan District of Caracas, which houses the Laberinto Cromovegetal. The university extends for more than 560 acres and includes 78 buildings with 190 classrooms, laboratories, administrative and utilities offices, and a recreational area extending approximately 49 acres, which is used by both the internal and external community. In addition, it includes over 1.300.000 sq. ft of internal walkways and routes in an environmentally protected area that encompasses more than 400 acres.
The Simon Bolivar University Laberinto Cromovegetal is a landscaping piece specially conceived for the terrain upon which it is built and comparable to other pieces already designed by the artist for Marseille and Medellin. With a diameter of 253 ft. and comprising 12 cypresses and 53,000 plants organized by color (red, green, and yellow), this work synthesizes the harmony among the human being, nature, and aesthetics, having become a symbol for the institution. As viewers wonder through it, they can enjoy the chromatics of a garden conceived as a plastic structure in which colors are generated by flowers and plants that undergo changes over time.
